PB1B: Inspecting Genre Generators
SCIgen
This websites genre focuses on random computer science papers, It also helps take a very low submission paper and turn it into a paper with maximized amusement. When experimenting with this website, it tells you that you can plug in your own CS paper and put in different authors so that it can generate it for you. I used the example and typed in "rooter" and it came up with a whole paper and stated the introduction, related work, different principles of the paper and the conclusion. After that, I typed in "Smith" and another paper came up on computer science. A convention of this website would be that all the papers are about computer science. Another convention would be that it asked for the author, every time, when looking for a paper.
Memes:
This website is all different memes or you can make up your own meme. The genre this website states that you can look up "hot memes", which are the memes that are trending at the moment. In this section it gives you different categories of the memes, states how many images are in that category and it also shows you how many people like it and which ones are going downhill on likes. I clicked on "grumpy cat good", which was one of the trending memes, and the convention of this was that it was the same picture of a cat over and over again, just different words to describe the cats feelings. Each category you click on, will have the same picture as the "genre", but yet there are different genres throughout each category.
Plot Generator: www.plot-generator.org.uk/create.php?type=5
This website strictly sticks to making up a mystery. It tells you exactly what you need, for each mystery you need a protagonist/amateur detective, two love interests, a mysterious town, three types of crime or sin, three adjectives that could be used to describe the place, an objective that could describe an object, four positive adjectives to describe somebody's character, an activity two people could do together, two jobs and something you can become addicted to. When i filled that all out, It gave me a whole story that could be written that matched my answers that i put in. A convention to this website was that it has to be a mystery. Although, online there are genre generators for just about any convention imaginable.
For all of these websites, it would help someone better understand genre because each of them have different conventions for what you are looking for. Each of them had a place where you needed to plug in your own information for them to contract/help you come up with something. The first website just focused on science (computer science) and you had to plug in an author that would help you. The memes website, you could search any category you can think of that you like and it would come up with different memes related to that. For the website i picked, you could really be interested in mystery but not know where to start with writing a mystery story. It helped because all you needed to do was fill in the categories given to you and they constructed the rest. Each of these websites helped you and they also gave you a starting point for what you were looking for. Looking at each of these websites and experimenting with them can help anyone understand genre more because they all had a different theme to them, whether it was science, memes or writing a story. The genre generators can be a helpful or useful tool in composing any genre.
